Wedding Venues in Central PA: A Photographer’s Guide
Choosing your wedding venue is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make while planning your wedding. Beyond finding a space that fits your guest list and style, it’s worth thinking about how the venue will look and feel in your wedding photographs.

Choosing the right wedding venue is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make when planning your wedding. Beyond finding a space that fits your guest list and style, your venue becomes the backdrop for the photographs and memories you’ll carry with you for years.
As a Central Pennsylvania wedding photographer and videographer, I’ve had the opportunity to photograph weddings and celebrations throughout Harrisburg, Lancaster, Elizabethtown, New Cumberland, and the surrounding areas.
Rather than creating a generic list of venues, I wanted to share three Central PA wedding venues I’ve had experience photographing and what makes each location special from behind the camera.
1. Stone Gables Estate / St. Michael’s Vineyard – Elizabethtown, PA
Stone Gables Estate offers the kind of Pennsylvania scenery that works beautifully for wedding photography.
The property combines an elegant countryside atmosphere with greenery, open landscapes, and plenty of opportunities to create different looks throughout the wedding day.
From a photographer’s perspective, I love venues where we don’t have to travel somewhere else to find beautiful portrait locations. Having everything nearby means more time enjoying your wedding and less time moving from place to place.
Around golden hour, the landscape gives us an opportunity to step away from the reception for a few minutes and create something intimate and cinematic.
Best for: vineyard weddings, romantic celebrations, outdoor portraits, countryside weddings, and golden-hour photography.
Photographer’s tip: Build 10–20 minutes of sunset portraits into your wedding timeline.
2. Susquehanna Club – New Cumberland, PA
The Susquehanna Club in New Cumberland offers a completely different atmosphere.
For couples planning an elegant and traditional celebration, this type of venue gives us beautiful opportunities for reception photography, formal portraits, details, and candid moments throughout the evening.
One thing I pay close attention to when photographing indoor receptions is lighting. Once the sun goes down, I use professional off-camera lighting and flashes to preserve the atmosphere of the room while keeping people beautifully lit.
That becomes especially important during entrances, speeches, first dances, parent dances, and the dance floor.
Best for: elegant receptions, traditional weddings, formal celebrations, and indoor wedding photography.
Photographer’s tip: Don’t be afraid of darker reception spaces. With the right lighting techniques, they can create some of the most dramatic photographs of the wedding.
3. Lancaster Liederkranz – Lancaster County, PA
Lancaster Liederkranz brings another distinct look to a Central Pennsylvania wedding.
Lancaster County has so much character, and venues throughout the area give us opportunities to combine the celebration itself with the surrounding Pennsylvania scenery.
When I’m photographing a wedding, I’m always looking beyond the obvious portrait locations. A patch of beautiful light, an interesting wall, trees, architecture, or even a quiet area just outside the reception can become the setting for one of the strongest photographs of the day.
That’s part of what I love about wedding photography—you don’t always need a massive landscape to create something meaningful.
Best for: intimate celebrations, Lancaster County weddings, candid photography, and couples looking for a relaxed atmosphere.
What Makes a Wedding Venue Great for Photography?
When I arrive at a wedding venue, I’m looking at much more than the ceremony space.
I’m studying the light, architecture, landscape, getting-ready areas, reception space, and where the sun will be later in the evening.
I look for:
Beautiful natural light
Interesting architecture
Multiple portrait locations
Space for family photographs
Outdoor areas for sunset portraits
Indoor options in case of rain
Reception spaces that work well after dark
But your venue doesn’t need to check every box.
An experienced wedding photographer should know how to create beautiful photographs with the environment and conditions they’re given.
Save Time for Golden Hour
One of my biggest recommendations for couples is simple:
Give me 20 minutes around sunset.
You don’t need to disappear from your wedding reception for another hour-long portrait session.
We’ll step outside, find beautiful light, slow everything down for a few minutes, and create something together.
Those quiet moments often become some of my favorite photographs from the entire wedding day.
Your Venue Is the Setting. Your Story Is What Matters.
There isn’t one perfect wedding venue in Central Pennsylvania.
Maybe you’re getting married at a vineyard in Elizabethtown. Maybe you’re planning an elegant celebration near Harrisburg. Maybe Lancaster County feels like home.
Choose somewhere that feels like you.
Because years from now, you’re probably not going to remember whether every decoration was perfectly positioned.
You’re going to remember the people.
The laughter.
The nervousness before walking down the aisle.
The way your partner looked at you.
And the people who aren’t always going to be in the room with you forever.
That’s what your wedding photographs preserve.
