What Are Model Digitals?

Model digitals—sometimes called polaroids—are simple photographs that show a model’s natural appearance.

Unlike fashion editorials or heavily retouched portraits, digitals aren’t supposed to transform you.

They’re supposed to show you.

Agencies typically want clean photographs with simple lighting, minimal styling, and little to no heavy retouching.

The goal is to clearly show your face, proportions, profile, and overall appearance.

Why Do Modeling Agencies Ask for Digitals?

An elaborate portfolio photograph can show how you look after professional hair, makeup, lighting, styling, and retouching.

Digitals answer a different question:

What does this model naturally look like right now?

That’s important when an agency or casting director is deciding whether you could be right for a particular job.

Because of this, good digitals should be clean, consistent, and distraction-free.

What Photos Do You Need for Model Digitals?

A typical model digital session includes several important angles and compositions.

Depending on what you’re submitting for, we may photograph:

• Clean headshot

• Three-quarter portrait

• Full-body photograph

• Left profile

• Right profile

• Front-facing portrait

• Natural smiling photograph

• Neutral-expression photograph

I’ll guide you through your positioning and posing during the session, so you don’t need modeling experience to get started.

What Should You Wear for Model Digitals?

Keep it simple.

Your clothing should show your proportions without distracting from you.

A classic option is a fitted black or neutral top paired with fitted jeans or simple pants.

Depending on the agency’s requirements, women may also be asked for photographs in simple fitted clothing or heels.

Avoid oversized clothing, large logos, complicated patterns, excessive jewelry, or anything that hides your natural proportions.

The agency should notice you first—not your outfit.

Hair and Makeup for Model Digitals

Natural is usually best.

Heavy makeup can work against the purpose of digitals because agencies want to see your natural features.

Keep makeup minimal or follow the specific instructions provided by the agency you’re submitting to.

Hair should also be kept relatively natural.

During the session, we can photograph different variations when appropriate, such as hair down and hair pulled back.

If an agency has given you specific submission requirements, bring them with you. We can build the session around exactly what they’re requesting.

Do Model Digitals Need Retouching?

Digitals should not be heavily retouched.

That doesn’t mean the photographs should look unprofessional.

Lighting, exposure, white balance, composition, and color should still be handled professionally. But skin texture, facial structure, body proportions, and defining features shouldn’t be dramatically altered.

The goal is an accurate representation of you.

Good digitals are polished without looking artificial.

Model Digitals vs. Modeling Portfolio Photos

These are two different tools.

Digitals are clean, simple, and natural.

Portfolio photographs show range, creativity, styling, expression, movement, and your ability to work in front of a camera.

If you’re serious about modeling, eventually you’ll probably want both.

A strong portfolio helps show what you can do once you’re there.

Do I Need Modeling Experience?

No.

You don’t need to already be signed with an agency or have years of modeling experience to schedule digitals.

In fact, professional digitals can be a great starting point if you’re preparing to submit to agencies for the first time.

I’ll guide you through where to stand, where to look, how to position your body, and what we need to capture.

You don’t need to arrive knowing how to pose.

How Often Should Models Update Their Digitals?

Your digitals should represent what you currently look like.

If you significantly change your hair, appearance, or overall look, it’s worth updating them.

Models may also periodically refresh their digitals so agencies and casting directors aren’t looking at photographs that no longer accurately represent them.
