Best Engagement Photo Locations in Central PA

Getting engaged is one of those moments that deserves more than just beautiful photos—it deserves a location that feels like you.

As a Central Pennsylvania engagement photographer, I’ve spent years photographing couples throughout Harrisburg, Lancaster, Hershey, and the surrounding areas. One of the biggest questions I hear is:

“Where should we take our engagement photos?”

The good news is that Central PA has an incredible variety of locations. You can stand above the Susquehanna River at sunset, walk through downtown Harrisburg, explore peaceful nature trails, or create something elegant surrounded by historic architecture.

Here are some of my favorite engagement photo locations in Central PA.

1. White Cliffs of Conoy – Marietta, PA

If you want your engagement photos to feel adventurous, cinematic, and completely different from a traditional park session, the White Cliffs of Conoy is one of my favorite locations.

The white landscape overlooking the Susquehanna River almost feels like another planet. During golden hour, the cliffs catch the warm evening light while the river and surrounding landscape create an incredible backdrop.

I recently photographed a surprise proposal here, and the combination of the cliffs, sunset, and open landscape created some of the most unique engagement images I’ve photographed.

Best for: adventurous couples, surprise proposals, cinematic portraits, and golden-hour sessions.

Best time: approximately one hour before sunset.

2. Pennsylvania State Capitol – Harrisburg, PA

For couples who want something elegant and timeless, the Pennsylvania State Capitol is hard to beat.

The massive staircase, stone architecture, columns, fountains, and surrounding city streets give engagement photos an editorial feel without leaving Harrisburg.

I especially love this location when couples dress up. A suit, long dress, heels, or more fashion-forward wardrobe can completely transform the session.

After photographing around the Capitol, we can also walk into downtown Harrisburg for a completely different second look.

Best for: elegant, editorial, fashion-forward, and city-inspired engagement photos.

3. Harrisburg Riverfront & Walnut Street Bridge – Harrisburg, PA

If you want the city without losing the beauty of nature, Harrisburg’s riverfront gives us both.

The Susquehanna River, bridges, skyline, and walking paths create a huge amount of variety within a relatively small area.

Around sunset, the river reflects the changing sky and gives us beautiful warm light. We can create relaxed walking photographs along the water before transitioning into more dramatic portraits as the sun disappears.

It’s also easy to combine the riverfront with downtown Harrisburg or the Capitol, giving you multiple looks during one engagement session.

Best for: relaxed couples, city lovers, walking photos, and sunset sessions.

4. Wildwood Park – Harrisburg, PA

Wildwood Park is one of my favorite options around Harrisburg for couples who want their engagement photographs surrounded by nature.

The park gives us walking trails, wetlands, trees, tall grasses, boardwalk areas, and plenty of natural scenery. Instead of relying on one main backdrop, we can move throughout the park and create several different looks during the same session.

I especially like Wildwood when I want photographs to feel peaceful and intimate. Walking together through the trails also gives couples something natural to do, which can help create candid photographs instead of making every image feel posed.

The scenery changes throughout the year, making it a strong option for spring greenery, warm summer evenings, and fall engagement sessions.

Best for: natural, candid, romantic, and outdoor engagement photos.

5. Fort Hunter Mansion & Park – Harrisburg, PA

Fort Hunter is another location where we can create several completely different looks without traveling between locations.

You have historic architecture, open grass, mature trees, and views overlooking the Susquehanna River.

That combination gives us the ability to move between elegant portraits around the historic property and more relaxed photographs surrounded by nature.

It works especially well for couples who want their engagement gallery to feel romantic and timeless without being overly formal.

Best for: romantic, classic, historic, and natural engagement sessions.

6. Hershey Gardens – Hershey, PA

If flowers are part of your vision, Hershey Gardens is one of the most beautiful options around Central Pennsylvania.

The landscaped gardens, seasonal flowers, and greenery create a softer and more romantic atmosphere than many of the area’s mountain and river locations.

Your gallery can change dramatically depending on the season, making this a beautiful option for couples planning spring or summer engagement photographs.

Because gardens and private properties can have specific rules regarding professional photography, I always recommend checking current photography policies, admission requirements, and hours before planning the session.

Best for: romantic, colorful, elegant, and garden-inspired engagement photography.

7. Chickies Rock – Columbia, PA

For couples who aren’t afraid of a little adventure, Chickies Rock offers incredible views of the Susquehanna River.

The combination of wooded trails, rock formations, and overlooks allows us to create a gallery that starts intimate and natural before ending with something much bigger and more dramatic.

This is another location where golden hour can completely transform the photographs.

If you want your engagement session to feel more like an adventure together than a traditional photo shoot, this is a great option.

Best for: adventurous couples, fall engagement sessions, hiking couples, and dramatic landscapes.

8. Downtown Lancaster – Lancaster, PA

Not every engagement session needs mountains and fields.

Downtown Lancaster is perfect for couples who want their photographs to feel modern, stylish, and alive.

Historic architecture, brick, alleyways, storefronts, crosswalks, and city streets give us opportunities to create photographs that feel almost like still frames from a movie.

I also love the possibilities for couples who want something more editorial and fashion-inspired.

You can even turn your engagement session into a date—grab coffee, walk through the city, or finish the evening with drinks or dinner.

Best for: editorial, documentary, fashion-forward, and urban engagement photography.

9. Lancaster County Covered Bridges

Few things say Pennsylvania quite like a covered bridge.

Lancaster County’s covered bridges are especially beautiful during the fall, when the surrounding landscape turns orange, red, and gold.

For couples who want something rustic without making their photographs feel overly posed or country-themed, combining a covered bridge with nearby fields, roads, and countryside can create a beautiful and timeless gallery.

Best for: rustic engagement photos, fall sessions, and couples who love Pennsylvania scenery.

How to Choose Your Engagement Photo Location

Don’t choose a location simply because it looks good on Instagram.

Think about what actually represents your relationship.

Maybe you love hiking together. Maybe your first date happened downtown. Maybe you spend your weekends exploring Lancaster. Maybe you want to dress up and create something that looks like a fashion editorial.

Those details matter.

When I plan an engagement session, I think about the couple, wardrobe, season, weather, direction of the sun, and the overall feeling we want the photographs to have.

The location is the canvas. Your relationship is the story.

What Is the Best Time for Engagement Photos in Central PA?

For most outdoor engagement sessions, I recommend photographing around golden hour, usually during the final hour or two before sunset.

The lower sun creates softer light, warmer skin tones, and beautiful backlighting.

Spring brings flowers and fresh greenery. Summer gives us long evenings and lush landscapes. Fall is incredible for Pennsylvania foliage, while winter can create a completely different minimalist and cinematic atmosphere.

There really isn’t one perfect season.

There’s simply the season that fits your story.

What Should You Wear for Engagement Photos?

I usually recommend bringing two looks when the session allows it.

One can be relaxed and natural, while the second can be more elevated.

Think jeans and a clean neutral top for one look, followed by a dress, suit, jacket, or something more fashion-forward for the second.

I also recommend choosing clothing that complements your partner rather than trying to match perfectly.

Most importantly, you should still feel like yourself.

The best engagement photographs happen when you eventually forget you’re being photographed.
